Tocino! at "Binalot"

I don't know about you, but Tocino is right up there in my list of favorite Filipino dishes ever! This particular meal (in the photo) was from an establishment called Binalot, named after its ingenuous banana-leaf packaging. The meal comes with rice (duh!), half a salty egg, and a bite-size tomato. I also got some fish sauce (in the white container) to compliment my meal. Yum!

What is tocino?

Tocino or tosino is a cured meat product native to the Philippines. It is usually made out of pork and is similar to ham and bacon although beef is also used. It is often reddish in color and has a sweetish taste. Its name is derived from the Spanish word tocino, which is used to describe bacon or cured meat.

Does the banana wrap add fragrance to Tocino?

I thought it looks abit like Nasi Lemak. A Malaysian/Indonesian rice dish with pandan fragrance...

i don't think the leaf does much to the flavor cuz they only put the food on the leaf when they're ready to serve it... BTW, i googled nasi lemak and it's seems quite different to me. but i'll find a chance to try it when i go to malaysia in the future :D
